Statement of MoveOn Executive Director Rahna Epting on the January 6 Committee Opening Hearing

“What the nation will see this month, starting with the January 6 select committee hearings, is MAGA extremism on full display. From blocking the sensible gun violence prevention laws we urgently need to attempting to overturn Roe v. Wade to new evidence of their deadly coup attempt, Republicans are showing the nation their values, their priorities, and their agenda.

“When it comes to January 6, the facts are overwhelming and indisputable. Donald Trump, encouraged and empowered by the entire Republican Party, led a deadly coup attempt and tried to overthrow a free and fair election in a desperate move to hold on to power.

“And let’s be clear: Donald Trump and the Republican Party’s efforts to subvert our democracy didn’t start on January 6, and they didn’t end that day either. The threat to our democracy and our freedoms from MAGA extremism continues to this day.

“And every day we fail to hold those responsible accountable is another day the dark forces trying to undermine our democracy get stronger.

The GOP agenda means a total abortion ban; no meaningful, sensible gun violence prevention laws; and zero accountability for a deadly attempted coup.

“I can’t imagine a starker contrast for voters this fall than what they will see in June.”
